Hello everyone! We are Team Arus4x4. We are from SMK Taman Sejahtera. Our team has successfully made it to the Malaysian National Finals for the Land Rover 4 x 4 in schools competition this upcoming September 2017. In this competition, students must build a radio controlled four-wheel drive (4x4) vehicle to the specifications provided. It must successfully navigate and complete obstacles on an off-road test track which is just as demanding as a real off-road situation. The vehicle must emulate the capabilities of a full size 4x4 vehicle.

You can see an overview of the UK finals here, to have an idea of what the competition is like:

If we win the National Finals, we will get to go to Abu Dhabi to participate in the World Finals and meet many students from different countries.

We want to join the 4x4 in school competition because we want to extend our knowledge and gain new experiences and skills in automotive, specifically a four-wheel drive car works. Everyone has their own roles in the 4x4 in schools competition that extend beyond just STEM, but also including arts element. For example, we have 2 graphic designers and a copywriter that helps out with all of our promotional materials. We have decided to come up with 4 major team spirits that we work hard to adhere to, which are collaboration, respect, efficient and determination. These four values are what will guide us to complete our project.

We have started learning and exploring more about STEM education lifestyle which was inspired by our seniors that have joined and competed in many competitions representing our school. We were also given the opportunity to explore the STEM education world given by a non-profit organization Arus that opens our eyes to design thinking, coding and robotics. We realized that coding is going to be an important basic skill that is required in the future. It is important and can be used anywhere from automating processes, to helping people. This is what made us want to start learning to code.

What we like about our team is that we always work together, split, share our responsibilities and help each other out. What makes our team special is that our team members’ age ranged from 13 to 17 years old, and we all have our strength in the form of competitions we have joined and won, such as Young Innovator, Rero robotics, science fair participants and so on.

This variety of experience will allow us to combine our ideas and knowledge that can bring out the Wow factor in our project.

We are the kind of students that will work hard towards the goal we want. Our fundraising process has begun since the first day we got the invitation to join this competition. We have worked hard to create our team proposal and our team proposition for our potential sponsors. We opened booth to fundraise during Hari Kantin and Hari Keusahawanan Muda, went around a science fair to ask for public donation, through those efforts, we managed to raise RM500, but still we are short of the fund required for the project.

My team has done much for the competition. We have been working hard to get sponsorship money, to approach various companies around Bukit Mertajam, design our car, and even build a testing track for the competition. These will definitely help us during the competition – however, we are still missing the key ingredient to the competition – the car itself. This is why we come to you for help.

Our mock track

Once we get the car, we will be able to modify the car to suit the competition, test our car on the track, and improve the car design. This is what we will do from now until the competition day. The competition organizer has been kind enough to loan us a set for practice purpose. However, in order to be eligible for the competition, we will still be needing the actual car. Therefore, we hope that with your help, we would raise the money we need to buy the car sets for the competition. Please help us! We really appreciate all the help and support we can get.

Sincerely,

Team Arus4x4
