PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Most of SK Pokok Tai’s pupils come from low income families with many among them qualifying for the Rancangan Makanan Tambahan (RMT) food aid from the ministry. They’re guardians mostly work as rubber tappers. Their students’ involvement in handball has been an advancement in their sports participation and prestige despite the fact that their school does not even have a proper court that aligns with standard specifications.

From 2015 through to 2017, SK Pokok Tai has won at the district level (MSSD) with players advancing to the state level (MSSK) and national level (MSSM). They also actively engaged in more than 15 friendlies involving teams from Kedah as well as nearby states. However, most of the costs have been paid for by teachers and the school without financial input from the ministry.

In 2016, SK Pokok also won first place in the district level Handball Competition (MSSD) with two of our students going on to the state level (MSSK) where they won second place. They went on again to the national Handball Competition (MSSM) where they also secured second place. One of their proudest examples is former student, Nur Balqis, who was selected to attend the sports school, SMK Tunku Anum Tunku Abdul Rahman in Jitra. There, she was chosen to compete at the national level handball competition held in Terengganu last year.

More recently, they have just secured first place in the 2018 district-level Handball Competition.

Since the school budget has been cut, their school has had crucial financial issues. As a result of this, their school is only able to support approximately RM1,500 per year for sports activities. Cikgu Mariyani as the Vice Principal of Co Curricular activities has had trouble in managing the finances involved with sending their students to district, state and national level competitions. They have approached certain companies for sponsorship but their responses have not been happy ones. Their PTA (PIBG) has managed to provide some assistance but these funds are not nearly as large as those of other schools in the district. Despite this and for the continued success of their students, the teachers have had to use their own money to support some of these events.

SK Pokok Tai is now in the midst of building high-performing players with their coach trying out primary 3 students in order to form legacy teams that are able to enter even greater heights in handball. As many as 30 students have been selected for now with plans to add to this as they consider other factors such as training time, coaches and court-time.

Their plans, as it currently stands, involve training these primary 3 students with scheduled training sessions during the weekends. Throughout the year, they also plan to engage an external coach and enter competitions such as the Handball Open held in Penang. Their Coach, Mr. Shamsol Azhar, will usually train the kids on Thursdays and Saturdays from 5 pm till 7 pm. They also train without a coach on Fridays under teacher supervision. The training they have at the local futsal court in Pendang is more flexible for students but its distance of 28 kilometers from the school requires teachers to use their own vehicles to ferry students there which isn’t ideal.

Even though SK Pokok Tai is a rural school with little to no proper sporting infrastructure, they have shown that they are more than able to compete against schools with superior facilities. SK Pokok Tai is an esteemed school in their district of Pendang due to their being able to send representatives to compete at the national level (MSSM) every year.

This Handball project would be aligned with the ministry’s proposal to have a strong sports programme at schools. With strong support from the school and the local community, they will run this programme to live up to their tagline, “SKPT AWESOME".

PROJECT OBJECTIVES:

  • To ensure a more structured, consistent and sustainable training programme
  • Funds will be used to attend friendly matches, to rent the court for training, to hire an external coach, for transport costs and for sports equipment and apparel. Sports jerseys, for example, are currently being paid for out of our students pockets which puts a strain on their families.
  • To create a healthier student body

FOCUS AREAS:

Sports and Recreation (co-curriculum)

TARGET STUDENT OUTCOMES:

  • To reduce the financial strain on families as a result of participating in skill developing activities.
  • An increase in the number of students taking part in Handball
  • To send more students to participate in regional, state and national competitions
  • To instill a sense of school pride in students
  • To increase their students sense of possibility

GAMBARAN PROJEK:

FOKUS PROJEK:

Sukan dan Rekreasi (kokurikulum)

HASIL BAGI PELAJAR-PELAJAR:
