SMK Segambut needs funds to transform our School Library
Funds required / Dana diperlukan: RM 13,500
No. of students impacted / Bil. murid diimpak: 607 students (whole school)
Name of school / Nama sekolah: SMK Segambut, Kuala Lumpur
State / Negeri: Wilayah persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
Most of my students come from low family income. Our student attendance is at 95% and they love to study. But due to financial constraints, a large majority of our students are only able to read in school because they can’t afford to buy their own.Our school library is, frankly speaking, boring due to insufficient funds to make it more engaging. I need to make it a more inviting and comfortable space to ensure my students consistently come to read. At this time, we still do not have a condusive library even year by year we raise a fund from our SMKS teacher to make our library look better. In fact, we still have two empty racks just waiting to be filled with books. For your information, below are our activities that we have incharge to make our library more interesting year by year :
1. Book Cafe - after school hours as one of school's effort to make our students spend their time at the library.
2.Only 3 computer services for student's learning access(but its still not enough for students when it comes for PT3 & SPM project)
3. Mini zoo event - collaboration with Animals Petting Zoo. To give exposure for those are not afforded to visit the zoo.
4. Library week carnival
Why you should support us:
1. mostly our students came from low family income(B40)
2. Our kids love to study at our library after school
3. Our students do have a reading habit and like learning as a way to see the world.
With an improved library, they will be able to access all kinds of new knowledge while also complementing their classroom learning. My students very much feel the same way regarding the lack of reading materials. Students have to be exposed to learning through reading books as well as through the internet.
For the furniture and other materials, I plan to get them through retail shops. Books on the other hand, I will get from book fairs such as the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair at cheaper prices and in much higher quantities when compared to buying from book suppliers. To be able to acquire all these materials and books, I require resources.
As the library and media teacher (GPM) , I will be leading this project and will be aided by the Library Committee consisting of 70 other teachers. In the event I am transferred, the school administration and Library Committee teachers are very much committed and will work together to ensure the continuance and success of this project.
I propose to acquire furniture that will create an attractive 21st-century learning space like that which has been called for by the Ministry of Education (MoE). We will have themed corners that will inform students with new knowledge. The books we will be acquiring such as the Big Book will be appropriate for their reading levels and allow weaker readers to be able to use them as well. Facilities such as an internet area will widen the education scope of students and ease teaching in the library.
These proposed improvements along with an area where students can make performances will allow the library to be utilised fully by teachers and students alike to effectively acquire knowledge and to showcase their talents.
This project will improve the library environment into a more conducive and comfortable space for the use of out students. This will attract students to read, have discussions, share ideas and also make performances. Students will also use the library more consistently and the facilities there in order to read, search for information for their assignments and make them more knowledgeable and be able to excel in their academics.
