Name of school / Nama sekolah: SMK Seri Desa, Tanjung Karang

State / Negeri: Selangor

SMK Seri Desa is located in Tanjung Karang, Selangor. Often I have to mention that this place is near Kuala Selangor and Sekinchan to help people visualize its location. It takes about a 1 hour 30 minutes drive to Tanjong Karang from Kuala Lumpur. Most locals work in the traditional industry such as farming and fishing. I teach a fair number of Malay and Chinese students, and a few Indian students. Most of either have poor understanding of other languages other than their native language or they are low-proficiency students. It's hard for them to follow lessons and they get bored after some time.

Our science lab is provided with basic amenities such as electricity and water. We have enough materials and apparatus to do certain experiments. But the world is changing and I do not want my students to be left behind, and they should get equal learning opportunities just like the students who have everything to help them learn. So I feel we should at least have internet connection, a laptop, and a projector to do more than just looking at the chalkboard and paper.

I believe in using pictures, videos and simulations to attract attention and also help students to understand certain topics better.

For example, when I mention a scientific concept that is hard to be visualized by my students, I can just display it using the projector at that exact time. I will display all that I want to share with students and will know that they are paying attention when all eyes are on the screen. I want to place the projector in the science lab only, in order to keep it well-maintained and anyone who wants to use it can do so in the lab.

I teach 4 science classes with 30 students on average, that is equal to a total of120 students. Of course the number of students is higher considering that other teachers, let say 2 other teachers will also use the projector in the afternoon session.

I have used a projector many times throughout my four years of teaching. The LCD projector acts as an attention grabber: What I like and can see some of the advantages of using projector is, students pay attention longer and I know that at least they are looking at what is displayed. Without a projector, I will ask them to look at a passage and it’s hard for me to know whether they are following the lesson or not. It also encourages class participation with active assessment: I can use apps such as Plickers, whereby all students can answer multiple choice questions by holding up their unique QR code and teacher will scan using mobile phone and responses will be shown on the screen. This will make them competitive and excited to join in the learning.

Honestly, using an LCD projector will save time for us teachers. It will encourage teachers to make more interesting activities because it is easier to get access to technology. Great lesson plans will benefit the students of course.

I hope I can equip my science lab with a projector so I can deliver my lessons more efficiently and effectively. Help me to make this vision come true!

Sincerely,

Cikgu Nadhirah
