Funds required: RM4,000

No. of students impacted: 40

Name of school: SMJK Yoke Kuan, Sekinchan

State: Selangor

SMJK Yoke Kuan is situated in Sekinchan, a fishing and paddy village about 2 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. Despite being a rural school, students here spend a lot of time of tuition because they lack meaningful after-school activities to do. Students who are good in studies will excel. However, these are just a hand full. The rest of the students will just be idling their time away in school and at tuition centers with no purpose in life. They do not have aspirations beyond their village and do not see the importance of improving themselves.

We set up this initiative called Transformasi. It started back in 2015 with a group of 12 Form 2 students by another teacher, who has since left the school. You can find out about their first successful fund raising campaign on 100% Project here. This group of students were given unique learning opportunities. They learn how to use technology (coding, robotics, physical computing) to solve real-life problem in new and innovative ways.

This initiative has since then evolved into a student-led project, growing from just 12 students in 2015 to 30 students in 2016 and finally to a group of 60 students this year! They meet every Friday after school and learn among themselves and work on projects. They also regularly take part in other competitions, camps, and exhibitions outside the school.

Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF) is the largest science exhibition in the country and it attracts exhibitors and students from all over the world. In conjunction with the fair, there is the KLESF Challenge where students compete and exhibit STEM-related projects (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics).

My students first major win in any competition was back in 2015. Back then, they 4 teams participated in the competition and 2 teams actually won the silver medal! Their success has become the source of motivation for other students to join the “Transformasi” movement. In the same year, they went to Penang to participate in the National Level Young Innovate competition in which one team emerged as the 2nd runner up. They have since participated in many competitions, most notably winning the Best Invention prize for secondary school at ITEX 2016. 4 of them even won themselves a trip to Silicon Valley under MDEC’s #mydigitalmaker Global Exchange programme. They also took part in KLESF last year, where one of the teams won a bronze medal.

This year, I would like to send 40 students (10 teams), shortlisted from 20 teams, to join the Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF) on 3rd to 5th November. The school has graciously agreed to sponsor the cost of the bus (RM1200) while the PIBG will be chipping in RM1600 for meal allowance. Students have to pay for their own accommodation but that would also mean that those who cannot afford will not be able to go!

We have less than a week before the competition so we're really hustling to ensure that all our qualified students will be able to make it to the competition. We need help from the public to send our students to KLESF. All your kind support will be truly and deeply appreciated by myself, and the students.

Sincerely,

Cikgu Bee Ling
