SMK Seri Alam 2 is a high-need school located in Pasir Gudang. Most of the students stay around Bandar Seri Alam and Masai area. The main transport mode used are usually school bus and school van service sending directly from home to school, some students are riding their own motorcycles, while some are sent by their parents. The overall school attendance is about 90%, however the rate drop dramatically after final exam. Most students here do not have the motivation to study and they do not see how they will be doing in the future. Most of them never imagine themselves living and working outside Pasir Gudang.

Our school was offered the opportunity to visit General Electric (GE) when Ms Sri, the HR Leader came during TFM week in August to co-teach a Form 4 class with me.

She gave a briefing about her own company including the different departments and products. It was eye-opening for students because they never thought of the many other job choices offered in a company. The trip will be a 1-day company trip to GE on 17th November 2017 (Friday). There will be about 40 students with 4 teachers in-charge. I offer this opportunity to Form3 who already finished PT3 as well as the Form 4 students who will finish their final exam by the beginning of November.

This trip aims to expose students regarding the real working environment in an MNC and in a city. This will be the first collaboration between our school and GE. We wish to discuss further about other opportunity to the students, this may include on-job training for SPM leavers. The long term vision is to create an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) among high-school students whom may pursue their student in related field.

The exposure will help students to reflect on what they want to do in their career and to run a reality check on how they can achieve their career target.

The activity agenda will be planned by GE, mainly our students will be visiting the aviation site and a tour around different departments in GE. There will also be a Q&A session with the staff where our students have the opportunity to interview them to know more about the working culture. As a teacher in-charge, I will prepare worksheet with some questions in-advance for the students to find out during the company visit. The basic questions include some history about GE, the top 3 department that they are interested in and their key takeaway about the trip.

GE offered to sponsor our transportation fee, however, we still need funds to buy food for the students during the trip. It is important because we want our students to have a best experience from this visit.

We just need to raise RM 572 for food. With the help from the public, our students will be motivated by all the support they get and join this visit without worrying about the fees. All your kind support will be very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Cikgu Choong
