Membina tamadun melalui model di Kelas Sejarah

Each of my school students has a problem with comprehension of text.

We all know in order to understand and score for history, we need to at least understand the text we are reading. The text book that is in Bahasa Malaysia, unfortunately is not my student's first language.

All of my students are Sarawakian, which are of a variety of ethnic backgrounds, namely orang Iban, Kedayan, Kenyah, Kayan, Penan, Melayu Sarawak and Chinese mixed. In order for them to understand the text, I intend to bring it out of the books.

Imagine if it is possible to build a big model that maps out the human civilisations and the important places in world history.

Imagine being able to make connections of natural rivers and the existence of early trade. If students are able to see, make, discuss, create and feel with their hands, chances are they will ask more questions and they will be more interested to read what is within those books.

I plan to convert a classroom into a space where my students can explore and be "builders" of civilisations. So many lessons can be learnt through this process!

If I succeed in this approach with my own class of 39 students, chances are other teachers will follow suit and we can expand our model, attaching new land and ships that could grow over a period of an entire year and beyond. Not only will the model be kept for next year, it would be forever etched in the heads and hearts of the students impacted in the entire process.

VERSI BAHASA MALAYSIA


Setiap pelajar di sekolah saya mempunyai masalah dengan pemahaman teks.

Kita semua sedia maklum, untuk memahami dan mendapat markah baik dalam mata pelajaran sejarah, kita perlu sekurang-kurangnya memahami teks yang kita baca. Buku teks dalam Bahasa Malaysia, malangnya bukan bahasa pertama pelajar-pelajar saya.

Semua pelajar saya adalah dari Sarawak, yang mempunyai pelbagai latar belakang etnik, seperti Iban, Kedayan, Kenyah, Kayan, Penan, Melayu Sarawak dan campuran Cina. Bagi membantu mereka memahami buku teks, saya bercadang untuk membawa pembelajaran keluar daripada buku-buku.

Bayangkan kemungkinannya apabila kita membina sebuah model besar yang mencorakkan tamadun manusia dan tempat-tempat penting dalam sejarah dunia.

Bayangkan kita dapat mengkaitkan hubungan sumber sungai semula jadi dan kewujudan perdagangan awal. Jika pelajar dapat melihat, membuat, berbincang, mencipta dan merasa dengan tangan mereka sendiri, kemungkinan mereka akan bertanya lebih banyak soalan dan mereka akan lebih berminat untuk membaca apa yang ada di dalam buku tersebut.

Saya bercadang untuk menukar kelas kepada ruang di mana pelajar-pelajar saya boleh meneroka dan menjadi "pembina" tamadun. Pasti banyak pengajaran boleh dipelajari melalui proses ini!

Jika saya berjaya dalam pendekatan ini dengan kelas saya yang mengandungi 39 pelajar, kemungkinan besar guru-guru lain akan menyusul dan kita boleh mengembangkan model kita, menambah tanah baru dan kapal-kapal dan model ini akan sentiasa berkembang dan bertambah nilainya. Bukan sahaja model ini boleh disimpan untuk tahun-tahun akan datang, ia akan selamanya terpahat di dalam minda dan hati para pelajar yang terlibat dalam proses ini.
