Help protect our schools by sponsoring face masks to our students and teachers

The BIG GIVE is a fundraising campaign started by 100% Project in 2016 to provide teachers with school essentials at the start of the school year.

This year we are reactivating BIG GIVE to provide FREE Reusable Face Masks to ALL schools in Malaysia.

Why are we leading this initiative?

Due to COVID-19, all schools in Malaysia were abruptly closed and students have been made to learn from home since Malaysia imposed the MCO on 18 March 2020.

Months have passed and students and teachers have been struggling with effectively learning from home. Therefore, the Ministry of Education has announced that schools begin reopening in stages on 24 June 2020. However, our battle against COVID-19 is not yet over until we find a vaccine.

  • The reopening of certain classes in schools during this first phase involves some 500,000 students at 2,440 schools
  • Overall, there are nearly 5 million students enrolled in MOE primary and secondary schools in Malaysia- click on this link to view stats - Quick facts 2019_Malaysia Educational Statistics

We want to ensure the safety of our schools during the reopening - that means providing our students, teachers and school administrators with reusable cloth face masks to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in schools.

About This Fundraiser

We have partnered with Mangosteen, a social enterprise that is working with a community of mothers to make reusable cloth face masks. Each face mask costs RM20, so for every RM10 raised on 100% Project, Mangosteen will match the donation to provide a mask to a student or teacher.

When you donate to this initiative, you are not only sponsoring one (1) free reusable cloth face mask to a school, you are also indirectly securing the livelihoods of a community of mothers who are sewing these face masks to support their families.

Every single ringgit will be spent on securing the safety and the livelihoods of those most impacted by this global health pandemic through two key components:

  • Ensure that ALL schools (teachers, school administrators, students) get a FREE reusable cloth face mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19
  • Ensure mothers who are in need of a job to support their families get a steady flow of income, are paid a fair wage and are provided the resources, training and opportunity to become skilled artisans

A note from SMK Assunta's school Principal

The growth of SMK Assunta is best told in the words of the Assunta Alumni posting on https://assuntaalumni.com/

The school has a student population of slightly over 1,330. Majority of the students are staying around Bandar Sunway, Taman Medan, Taman Dato Harun and Puchong. Large number of students are from low-income families with joint parental income below RM3,000. Most of them come to school by the PJ City Bus which is a free bus initiated by Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya.

The socio-economic status of students is a major factor in school performance. It is harder for a school to achieve high academic performance with large numbers of students facing risk factors such as low family income, or parents with limited education who may struggle to provide support for learning. But just because the school may not have achieved excellent results, it doesn’t mean the school is “unsuccessful”. We in Assunta can make a significant impact on our students’ lives. And lifting outcomes for students in disadvantaged context can transform lives and communities, across generations.

Quotations of Sister Enda Ryan (the foundress of the school) from the Bernama interview of 11 December 2007 capture much of what we are still doing in Assunta :

At Assunta, I have always taught my girls more about the heart than the head. To feel love, compassion, understanding and appreciation of each other and our differences…

Nurture the seed of peace and harmony with the water of appreciation and understanding of cultures, customs and religions.

At Assunta, success is more than test scores. We try to bring the best out of every student regardless of background. We attempt to foster broader dimensions of learning critical to students’ overall success. These include social and emotional development, creativity and innovation, positive attitudes to learning and upholding morals and values.

School has resumed post MCO on 24 June 2020 for our 266 Form 5 girls. The Ministry of Education has given a set of SOP for schools to follow. Among them is the wearing of face mask though not compulsory is encouraged when the students attend school. Universiti Putra Malaysia medical epidemiologist and biostatistician Assoc Prof Dr Malina Osman said, “ Disposable surgical masks should only be used once if the duration of the mask usage is long .” Thus, each student will need a disposable face mask per day because she needs to wear it for at least 7 hours in school.

Dr Malina Osman further added, “ Another suggestion is for the public to wear washable, non-surgical masks with similar characteristics to surgical masks … ”

Some family household income had been impacted by the corona virus pandemic and some family members were out of a job during the epidemic. Most of them have no face masks in stock at home. Some would reuse one disposable mask for 3 – 4 days because the face mask, a basic protective gear during this pandemic could be unaffordable for most low-income families of our students.

I sincerely appeal to the community at large for washable/reusable cloth face mask for my students in need so that they can attend school protected against and reduce the spread of Covid-19.

Thanking you in anticipation of your generous contribution and support for our girls in Assunta.

- Cikgu Teresa Chan
